Out of the Blue
- Disciple of War or Magic level 50
- Limsa Lominsa Lower Decks (X:9.9 Y:11.0)

Limited Job
Blue mage is known as a limited job. There are several key points that distinguish it from other jobs.
- Blue mage functions independently of other classes and jobs, starting at level 1 with a maximum level of 70.
- When playing as a blue mage, it is possible to participate in duties with other players in preformed or undersized parties. However, the following duties will remain inaccessible:
- Duty Roulettes
- The Forbidden Land, Eureka
* It is not possible to change to blue mage after entering the instance. - Squadron Missions
- Deep Dungeons
- PvP, including duels
* It is possible, however, to enter the Wolves' Den as a blue mage. - Stone, Sky, Sea
- Hall of the Novice
- Blue mages gain greater experience from battling enemies in the open world than other jobs do.
* No bonuses are granted to experience gained from FATE or guildleve enemies. - Blue mage cannot be used to progress through the main scenario.
- Retainers cannot be assigned the blue mage job.
Learning Spells
Rather than gaining new actions by increasing in level, blue mages learn them from enemies. In order to do so, you must first witness an enemy perform a special attack in battle. Once it is defeated, you have a chance of acquiring the ability.
* Job level has no influence on when an action can be learned.
Blue Magic Spellbook
All spells you have learned are recorded in the Blue Magic Spellbook. The book also contains hints on how to acquire other spells.
Active Actions
Before spells can be set to your hotbar, they must first be selected as active actions. You can have up to 24 active actions at any given time.
* Active actions cannot be changed during combat or during certain duties.
Active Sets
Your blue magic active actions and hotbar slots can be saved to what is known as an active set. Up to five different active sets can be created, allowing you to switch quickly between your preferred combinations of active actions and hotbar slots.
Affected Hotbar Slots
Only the slots on blue mage-exclusive hotbars will be saved to an active set. This means that creating an active set while playing as a different job/class will not save those hotbars, leaving your blue mage hotbar layout unchanged. Slots on shared hotbars are also excluded.
Affected Actions
The hotbar layout of all blue magic spells, whether active or inactive, will be saved to a set, along with any macros.
※ All macros will be saved, regardless of blue magic content.
Loading Sets
Loading an active set will only affect blue mage-exclusive hotbars.
Whalaqee Totems
Certain blue magic spells can be acquired via Whalaqee Totems.
To obtain these items, complete the blue mage quest "Blue Leading the Blue" and certain achievements, then speak to Wayward Gaheel Ja in Ul'dah - Steps of Thal (X:12.5 Y:12.9).
